A Celebration Gala Hangar Ball is being held to commemorate an honour the selfless bravery and courage of the RAF pilots during the Battle of Britain. This special evening, sponsored by local advocates Babbé, will have a 1940s RAF theme with dinner and dancing to the big swing and dance tunes of The Glen Miller Sounds of The Elastic Band. Monies raised from the tickets, raffle and auction will go towards the Battle of Britain “Wings Appeal”, RAFA’s official charity and “Guernsey Supporting 201 Squadron” for their local activities with children and the elderly in Guernsey.

Guernsey’s unique and charming character, drawn from the French and English influences that shape this Channel Island, provides the backdrop to the 5th Victor Hugo International Music Festival to be held 20 – 25 September 2010. The festival takes the name of its best known resident of all time for it was in Guernsey that Victor Hugo found respite from his political foes for 15 years.

Including some of Europe’s most accomplished musicians, the festival has a literary theme with strong local connections. In particular, it continues its homage to Victor Hugo by commissioning songs based on his poetry from some of France’s leading composers. The BBC’s voice of music, Brian Kay, will interview musicians prior to each concert.

An evening where Chamber members network with their clients, staff and business partners and associates. Whilst the dress code may be “Black Tie” the atmosphere is one of fun, relaxation and entertainment as the Guernsey Chamber of Commerce and its members look back on the events and achievements of 2010 and look forward to the opportunities that 2011 will bring.

The Guest Speaker is Jon Moulton who is Chairman of Better Capital and was formerly Managing Partner of Alchemy, a UK-based private equity firm, that invested over £2 billion with an emphasis on dealing with troubled companies and distressed debt.

He is a Chartered Accountant, a CF and Fellow of the Institute for Turnaround Professionals and previously worked with Citicorp Venture Capital in New York and London, Permira and Apax. Jon is a trustee of the UK Stem Cell Foundation, an active angel investor and a non-executive Chairman of stockbroker FinnCap.

Since the 1940s, Guernsey has staged its own Battle of Britain Air Display to remember and commemorate the selfless courage and bravery of the British airmen and crew who fought so valiantly from June to October 1940 repelling the German Luftwaffe from invading England.

The Battle of Britain Air Display takes place in the skies above St. Peter Port, Guernsey and it is an opportunity to remember the RAF’s role in both times of conflict and peace. Aircraft participating in the annual display range from the Spitfire and Hurricane of yesteryear (and sometimes the hugely popular and graceful Lancaster) to the spectacular aerobatic displays of The Blades and the Breitling Wing Walkers. The Red Arrows are always a major highlight as their tight and breath-taking formation flying defies gravity and involves great precision and skill.

The Battle of Britain Air Display is the pinnacle of Battle of Britain Week in Guernsey which is dedicated to raising funds and collecting donations for RAFA Wing’s Appeal that is dedicated to supporting ex-servicemen and women and their families throughout the British Isles.

Throughout Liberation Day 2010, residents of and visitors to Guernsey were able to stroll the streets of St. Peter Port and along the sea front enjoying local live entertainment, dancing to the swinging sound of a 40s Big Band, tasting the delights of the very best Guernsey local produce, sampling the culinary excellence of France with the colourful Normandy Markets, choosing from a range of interactive activities for all age groups and voting who best epitomises the best “Dress Up Guernsey” with costumes depicting the dark days of World War II, the more nostalgic era of Ebenezer Le Page or the symbolism and caricature of the Guernsey Donkey!

Two major focal points of the 65th Liberation Celebrations were the Liberation Cavalcade with over 165 entrants and the premier of “Guernsey Sings” – A Thousand Plus Voices” comprising choirs, students, teachers and individuals from across Guernsey.

The evening hosted a rock concert that kept everyone dancing leading up to the Liberation Firework Extravaganza display that marked a landmark year for Guernsey’s annual freedom celebrations: truly a day to “Remember and Celebrate”.

Lecturer Robert Cumming, currently Director of British Programmes for the Boston University of London talked about how Old Master paintings are rich in coded and symbolic messages and they need to be decoded just as the code breakers at Bletchley Park had to break the Enigma code in World War II. This  fascinating talk took a close look at one of the most famous paintings of the Renaissance, Botticelli’s “Primavera”, and explained why and how it, and many other Renaissance masterpieces, brilliantly exploited and developed this rich language, and how it still says a lot to us today.

From the early sixties, when he left the Royal College of Art more famous than his teachers, Hockney’s paintings have shown a charm and humour that sets them apart from others of his generation. A naturally gifted draftsman, his love of ingenious visual devices has led him to experiment with a whole range of techniques, from stage design to coloured paper making. From the early abstract expressionist images, through his famous Californian scenes of swimming pools to the photo-montages of the mid eighties.

Lecturer Douglas Skeggs, international lecturer on fine art, author, television presenter and artist of note, presented the long career of an artist whose wit and imagination has never faltered.

800 guests attended to witness and applaud the winners of the Guernsey Awards for Achievement and the guest speaker was Frances Edmonds, best-selling author and inspirational, humorous and engaging presenter who was voted in 2009 as Britain’s most entertaining female after-dinner speaker in a survey by The Times newspaper.
