This year marks 70 years since the Guernsey apprenticeship scheme was first established. Celebrations of this landmark year kicked off with the official opening of an exhibition in the Beau Sejour Concourse on Tuesday 25 June which featured profiles of around 50 apprentices going back to 1950. To create this fascinating glimpse into the history and evolution of the scheme, past and present apprentices from a range of disciplines were interviewed and told their individual stories of their personal experiences of being an apprentice and of their career path once they had completed their training.
This year’s Guernsey College of Further Education’s Apprentice of the Year was also announced. Igor Freitas, who is a Carpentry Apprentice working with Jamie Allez Carpentry, was selected from the winners of each of the 12 sectors currently offering an apprenticeship study option.
