Proms on the Pier 2013

PROMSLOGO_BORDERGuernsey’s most popular end of summer event ‘Proms on the Pier’ returned to the Albert Pier on Saturday 7 September 2013 thanks to the sponsorship from Principal Sponsor 1st Central Group and Gold Sponsors the Guernsey Arts Commission, Long Port Group, Norman Piette, Odey Wealth Management and Sure Big Screen.

The 2013 Proms on the Pier was a great success and showcased spectacular live music in the first half from Guernsey Symphonic Winds and The Guernsey Bach Choir and the second half broadcasted the fabulous Last Night of the Proms live from the Royal Albert Hall in London. The evening also saw a glorious firework display set to music and finished with dancing and singing along to the talented local jazz band Stormy Monday.

Conducted by Alan Gough, Guernsey Symphonic Winds performed a combination of classical and internationally recognisable music. Highlights included ‘Sabre Dance’, the final act of the ballet Gayane by Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian, compositions from the globally acclaimed ‘Les Miserables’, a Verdi Overture and thrill of James Bond 007 songs.

The Guernsey Bach Choir, also conducted Alan Gough, performed a variety of pieces including Johann Strauss’s ‘Air on a G String’ and ‘Missa Luba’ from Hazen’s African Sanctus.

As the finale to the live section of the evening, Guernsey Symphonic Winds and The Guernsey Bach Choir joined musical forces to perform Sibelius’ ‘Finlandia’ and The Battle Hymm of the Republic with the heart stirring opening of ‘Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory…’

The American theme of the 2013 Proms on the Pier continued when the action moved to the Royal Albert Hall in London where Marin Alsop made history as the first female conductor of the Last Night of the Proms. Marin is the Chief Conductor of the Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Cabrillo Festival.

For 2014 islanders and visitors are welcomed to enjoy this free annual event. More information for 2014 will be released at a later date.  If you are a local business and would like to contribute or sponsor the 2014 Proms on the Pier please contact Natalie Davidson on +44 (0) 1481 728686
